hi this is Eric Odell with continuoustesting live and we're here live at CAScontinuous delivery and agile summithere in London and I'm joined by JasonBloomberg who is the president of intelex and you have just finished yourkeynote presentation and we want you totell our viewers a little bit about intelex and you know what are you hearingfrom your clients about their DevOpsjourneys well in telex we are anindustry analysts firm and we focus onagile digital transformation so thebroader story of digital transformationin the enterprise covers a lot of basesit's a customer driven story that issoftware empowered but one of the keythemes of digital transformation is ahorizontal self-organization so acrossfunctional groups who are meeting theneeds of customers and the DevOpsorganization out of this software grouphas really figured out how to get thisto workso one of the things that we talkedabout that I talked about this morningin the keynote is how DevOps can notonly deliver better software faster butcan also be a model for betterself-organization for the organizationas a whole which helps the organizationmeet the needs of digital transfer mightnow you just mentioned digitaltransformation a couple times there whatgive us a definition what exactly isdigital transformation well the way wesee digital transformation is customerpreferences and behavior driveenterprise technology decisions so youmight think with that word digital thatit's about the technology but it'sreally about the customer it's aboutunderstanding that customer needs aredriving technology decisions andcustomer needs continue to change rightso so it's an environment of ongoingchange and enterprises now not only needto respond to change but actually needto be able to deliver change for theircustomers so they'll be able to disrupttheir own markets so in order to providea to achieve their competitive advantageand how is digital transformation justintricately you know connected to DevOpswhat we like to say that digitaltransformation is software is iscustomer driven but it's softwareempowered so it's now the responsibilityof the software organization to not onlymeet the needs of customers which ofcourse they have all along right but tomeet changing needs of customers morequickso it's about business velocity and it'sabout agility so DevOps is really thebest approach that we have for buildingbetter software more quickly that meanschanging needs of customers and you'renot going to be able to be successfulwithout with digital transformationunless you get the software piece ofthis right and that takes demo okay nowwe often hear this statement that everycompany today is a software company sowhat does that kind of statement implywell that's really part of thefundamental notion of transformationwell you can take any company you knowwe can take a real estate company or youcan take a manufacturer you can take abank but what's really changed is thatthat software is now becoming the thecontext for their offerings to theircustomers so if you look at modernbanking and it's not about you know abills in the drawer it's about bits onthe wire and it's about delivering valuefor customers via software whether it'smobile apps for consumers or about moresophisticated technology in the businesscontext it's becoming a softwarebusiness and this is not just happeningin financial services but really acrossthe board we're true that every industryis now rethinking the sorts of productsand services that they can bring tomarket in the context of software sosoftware is becoming the sort of the theground you know the ground rules foreverything that big companies do soyou've talked to enterprises andorganizations worldwide how would youevaluate the current state of testing inDevOps well testing is a part of thequality story by delivering bettersoftware faster and the better part isthe quality story but if you think aboutit it's not just about checking theboxes here's the requirements checkcheck check okay it's bug free rightthat's sort of the old way of thinkingabout testing today we're thinking aboutcontinuous quality meeting the needs ofcustomers on an ongoing basis and thatrequires a whole new way of thinkingabout testing because it can't just be aset of activities you throw over thewall to protesters it has to be acontinuous philosophy that is supportedby better automation so it's a toolingsupported story but it's really aboutrethinking what we mean by continuousquality and continuous testing in thecontext ofbetter software right now when we talkabout DevOps we often you know hear itin conjunction with CI CD but you know alot of times people are talking abouthow continuous testing is the missinglink for DevOps what's your response tothat well it's missing if you don't haveit right it because it's essential sonot every organization it's not missingfor every organization continuoussecurity is also a fundamental piece ofthe story that is often missing so ifyou take those four elements so you havedevelopment you have operations you havetesting and you have security really allof those are essential and they all haveto work together in order to deliverhigh-quality software on an on acontinuous basis so the continuous partof the story is the agility and velocitypart of the story how do we deal withchanging customer needs that requirescontinuous capabilities and if any oneof those falls flat whether it's thetesting whether it's securitydevelopment or operations any one ofthose that acts as a roadblock then thewhole thing goes slow right they allhave to go fast for the overall businessto move as quickly as it needs to soevery one of them is essential right andso for our viewers who are just reallykind of getting started on theircontinuous testing journey where wouldyou advise them to start well if youthink about software development overthe last 20 to 30 years we were talkingabout shift left quality back in the 90sit actually predates the agile movementwhere we realized a traditional wall ofwater four approaches to softwarequality where we ran all our tests afterthe development was complete well it'sreally the most expensive way ofdelivering quality software so by movingthat quality step moving the testingearlier in the lifecycle and we gotbetter results and we saved money rightbecause if we were able to build ourtests as part of the development processwe end up with better software well thatnow from the 1990s became a core part ofthe agile movement in the 2000s we'renow quality was part of the iterativesmall team approach that characterizedthe agile movement and agile is now fedinto DevOps where it's not just aboutthe software development piece but it'sabout operations and of course securityas well and so now we have this thiscross-functional notion of softwarewhere continuous quality is one offunctions that is part of thecross-functional story great and youheard it here from Jason Bloombergpresident of in telex if people wantedto learn more about intelligence wherethey go well our website is Intel XCOMint e lly XCOM alright and I encourageour viewers to go thereand we're going to be coming to you livewith continuous testing light all dayhere from the continuous delivery andagile summit here in London and we'llsee you next time

Continuous Testing is a philosophy of best practices to support DevOps and Digital Transformation initiatives. Listen to Jason Bloomberg, president of Intellyx and contributor to Forbes, as he explains the interdependence of testing, security, and operations throughout the SDLC.
