a lot has been written about thedifferences between agile andtraditional project management but Ithink one of the more valuable questionsto ask is what is the same between agileand traditional project managementmethodologies so let's just look at afew and I bet you that you can think ofsome more on your own I find this isvery valuable especially when you'relearning a new framework or methodologybecause it gives you a way to relate itback to what you already know so let'slook at the first one here every projecthas to have some way to describe thework so in a traditional project wemight use something like a workbreakdown structure to talk about thedeliverables and sub deliverables andthe work packages that have to be doneto deliver those things in an agilemethodology we might use user storiesand a product backlog to describe thework that has to be done or a sprintbacklog we have to have some way togather information about how the projectis going so in a traditional project wemight have a weekly progress meeting inan agile project we might have our dailyscrum or stand-up meeting once we gatherthat information we have to have someway to describe the progress we've beenmaking so far not only for ourselves butalso for upper management as well so wemight use a Gantt chart and atraditional project we might use a burndown chart in an agile project we mightalso describe the progress as far aswhat has been accomplished what has beendone we might look at a tracking Ganttchart which can show those things wemight use Kanban Kanban board or anonline system like Trello to actuallyhelp us see what has been done so far orwhat's in process we might also usesomething untraditional like earnedvalue analysis to look at the valuewe're getting out to try and look at howthat value correlates the time and moneywe're putting into the project so anagile we might use something like a burnup a chart as well so I just want you tothink about the factthere's probably more that unites usthan divides us when it comes to agileand traditional they're both greatmethodologies and different types ofprojects are appropriate for each butthey all have some common work they haveto do be sure to send me your questionson twitter using the hashtag PM officehours or you can contact me directly andI'll be happy to answer those in afuture office hours episode

When you take a step back, you might fine that these methods and frameworks have more in common than you think!
